According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 347 million people worldwide have diabetes. In 2012, an estimated 1.5 million deaths were directly caused by diabetes, and that number is increasing. WHO projects that diabetes will be the 7th leading cause of death in 2030.
Diabetes is also becoming more common in the United States. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, from 1980 through 2011 the number of Americans with diagnosed diabetes more than tripled (from 5.6 million to 20.9 million).
Today I posted a link in the "Natural health remedies" section of my "Links" page. The link points to a fascinating but disturbing article titled "Research: Insulin Can Kill Diabetics; Natural Substances Heal Them." The article's mention of the importance of protein folding in insulin reminds of the importance of protein folding in general, discussed in the books Signature in the Cell and Darwin's Doubt by Stephen Meyers.
